Woman rescued when attempting suicide in Anhui

At around 14 pm, Feb. 22, the local public security experts and firefighters of Dongzhi County, Anhui Province, successfully rescued a young woman, who wanted to jump from a 4th floor window at a residential community.The woman sat in the window, and shouted to rescuing workers emotionally, “Get away from me! I’ll jump if you don’t!” The woman did not want the rescuers to get closer to her, and pushed herself out from underneath the body while just grabbing the window sill.The firefighters ran downstairs to the third floor immediately to hoist up the woman’s legs, as she was at risk of falling down from the building at any moment. In the same time, the other rescue workers tried to get close to her by distracting the woman’s attention, and then quickly grabbed the woman.It was reported, the woman is 20-something years old, and has a history of mental illness of an intermittent nature.

Animal rights activist kneels to bears after witnessing bile extraction

Liu Xiang disqualified at Stockholm Indoor Tournament for false star

The Stockholm indoor athletics tournament kicked off in the early morning of Feb. 24 (Beijing Time). China’s hurdler Liu Xiang (刘翔), the 2004 Olympic champion, failed to nab two straight wins in the beginning of the season this year, as he was disqualified from the men’s 60m hurdle final due to a false start. Liu Xiang’s rival Dayron Robles, the 2008 Olympic champion, then made an easy win of 7.66 seconds.On last Saturday in England, Liu won the men’s 60m hurdle final in 7.41 seconds at the Birmingham indoor tournament, beating Robles convincingly who finished in 7.50 seconds.

Michael Jordan sues Qiaodan Sports over use of name in China

“傍名人 (傍 means to attach oneself to, and 名人 means celebrities, so the whole phrase refers to some people attempting to take advantage of the social influence of celebrities to benefit themselves) is a unique characteristic in China. It helps make profits, but sometimes it brings lawsuits too.Recently, Basketball legend Michael Jordan has filed a lawsuit in China against a Chinese sportswear company, Qiaodan Sports Company Limited (乔丹体育股份有限公司), accusing them of using his name without authorization, according to May Daily.Michael Jordan complained that the sportswear company has improperly registered and uses the name “Qiaodan (乔丹)”, in order to profit from the name by misleading the consumers.

“It is deeply disappointing to see a company build a business off my Chinese name without my permission, use the number 23 and even attempt to use the names of my children,” Jordan said in a statement.“This complaint is not about money. It’s about principle and protecting my name,” he added.But Qiaodan Sports Company responded to state that “Qiaodan Sports” has no connection with Michael Jordan. Qiaodan (Jordan in English) is just a common surname in western countries.Will Michael Jordan win the lawsuit? According to a survey conducted by a major web portal, it is surprising to find that near 40% netizens thought Jordan would lose the lawsuit in China.However, the lawsuit is sure to bring the negative impacts to “Qiaodan Sports”, no matter what the result would be, as Jordan fans, especially those who still think Jordan owns Qiaodan Sports, may stop using Qiaodan Sports products.

Further to this matter, NBA breakout star Jeremy Lin (林书豪) may face similar issues in China as a woman in the eastern province of Jiangsu has already registered his name, in Chinese characters, as a trademark, back in 2010. But the difference is when the name was registered, Jeremy did not have a certain reputation.

China Foreign Ministry supports Nanjing’s decision to suspend ties with Nagoya

Feb. 22, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei said at a regular news conference that the ministry supports Najing’s decision to suspend the official exchanges with Japanese city Nagoya because its mayor denied the Nanjing Massacre despite the well documented evidence that proves more than 300,000 people were murdered in December 1937 when Japanese troops occupied the then capital of China, Nanjing.Nagoya’s Mayor Takashi Kawamura said on Feb. 20 when meeting a visiting delegation from Nanjing that the Nanjing Massacre “probably never happened”, which triggered huge outrage in China.

Nanjing city published three annoucements on Feb 21 immediately after Kawamura’s irresponsible remarks, and stressed that Najing is suspending official contact with Nagoya.The Nanjing Massacre was an atrocity committed by Japanese military during their invasion. As the child of a Japanese soldier during the war, Kawamura should be sorry for what the Japanese army did in Nanjing, but he attempted to distort the historical facts.“We have made our position clear on the Nagoya mayor’s denial of the Nanjing Massacre and already lodged a solemn representation to the Japanese side,” Hong Lei said, adding that China is closely watching the issue.As 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of the normalization of China-Japan diplomatic ties, Hong also asked the Japanese side to work on the improvement of bilateral relations in light of the principles enshrined in the four China-Japan political documents, as well as act in the interest of both peoples based on the spirit of learning from history.

Thrifting a Go-Go

Ooooooh the excitement of it all. The dusty places. The things hidden "just" out of view. Spotting an owl before he spots me. Yes, yes, yes. I'm a thrifter.

I think I have been a thrifter since my family moved to "the cities" when I was about 15 or 16. The hidden joy of hole in the wall shops with dirty windows lured me in even then! My first furniture buy was an old secretary desk that I found in a tiny shop, hidden under a bunch of . . . well . . . junk! I still have it although Bella has custody of it these days.

Aaaaaaah! The 70s! I found him on a wall in a fun, fun shop. The young hipster dude manning the register said, "Sure! You can have it. Let me call the boss." He came back with a good price and now this little guy is MINE. Love him.

I kinda remember where I found this crazy thing. This must be the way you brought home memories in the 60s. The friend I was with when I bought this thought me crazy. I do believe she's right.

Whoooo hooooo! This little guy is marble! MARBLE! I love him. He's so regal. He's so cold. He's mine.

Okay, okay. I did not need another globe. I like globes. Yes, I am painfully aware I'm a little odd.

My BFF found this somewhere. Could you die? I squealed just like an owl. Or would that be a piggy? Let's stay with owl.

I have no idea why this guy appealed. Reminded me of something my momma had when I was a kid. I'm sure it was full of those weird little pink and green mints people used to eat in the 60s. Remember them? They were weird! Chalky and soft. Now I'm thinking about those weird mints. No, I don't want any, thank you.

This guy is just plain odd. Why on his end? Why the mouth open? Why is he in my big room?

Okay, I realize this is getting a little out of hand.

I threw in this random piece of McCoy pottery (I used to collect it) just to throw you off the scent of my obsessions.

Check this guy out! I was so excited to find this I nearly peed. I found him poking around on eBay of all places only to find that the seller lives about 1.5 miles from me and I've bought stuff from him before. He's a weird dude, but who cares. He had THIS! Oh the love, oh the joy. Did any of you guys crewel in the 70s? I did. I wish I had all that stuff I made back then. Given to relatives and such I guess. I was quite crafty in my youth. No more I'm happy to report.

I'd love to promise that I'll stay out of dusty shops, but I'd only be lying. And my new owl-friends wouldn't like that one bit.
