So it was Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Joburg this pastweek and I attended ALL the shows – and for most of them I was seated frontrow…yeah I’m bragging a bit!

I really had a great time…the shows were amazing andthe overall vibe was really fun – the FASHION was incredible and winter trendsfor 2012 is going to blow your mind!

So it’s that time of the year again when JoburgFashion Week kicks off, and this year they’ve partnered with Mercedes Benz –now called Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Joburg, and with an incredible lineup!

The Design School Southern Africa

Fashion Show 2011

This year’s DSSA Fashion Show was hosted inassociation with The Sansui Summer Cup, which also meant that 5 of the topFashion Students would get a chance to showcase their work at the 2011 Sansui SummerCup Races!

The Show was really fun with 1^st, 2^ndand 3^rd year DSSA students showing some of their best work – the 3^rdyear graduates were judged by a panel and the top 5 designers were announced.

Congratulations to Farai Chingoka, Marne Nelson,Naomi Wiid, Cecilia Jonker and Gerty Cronje for being awarded as the topperforming students in their final-year of BA Fashion Design at DSSA.

Positive Heroes

A BLOOMing Success

The Positive Heroes BLOOM Fashion Show & Actionwas a huge success. The evening was filled with the finest Fashion form over 20South African Designers, and amazing performances by Lindiwe Suttle &Sterling EQ.

This incredible night raised R120 000 that will beused to spearhead Positive Heroes’ projects. Initiatives like these are the wayforward to making a difference in thousands of South African’s lives.

Positive Heroes

BLOOM

Positive Heroes and The City of Cape Town will behosting BLOOM, a fashion show and auction on November 3^rd 2011at the Civic Centre.

Positive Heroes is a South African non-profitorganization that was founded in 2007, with the aim to bring awareness and theprevention of millions of South African deaths as a result of the stigma, fearand ignorance that surround HIV/AIDS.

This amazing night of Outreach and Awareness will befilled with fashion from over 20 amazing South African Designs. Style &Music Icon, and in my opinion a true South African Heroine, Lindiwe Suttle willalso be preforming at this year’s BLOOM initiative.

“We empower each other with ourstories, stories that are open and honest are stories that heal and can helpchange and save lives. Having ‘Positive Heroes’ in our lives is what life in generalis all about, these Heroes and Sheroes are helping to change the stigma 
surrounding HIV & AIDS” –Lindiwe Suttle

The evening will also bring a performance by one SouthAfrica’s most successful instrumental bands Sterling EQ.

“By aligning the fight against HIV (andthe sigma around the disease) with celebrity culture through a bold andexciting fashion show like BLOOM, makes a very strong statement. With SA'sinternationally renowned designers and entertainers publically supporting thiscause, the public is reminded that this disease needs to be acknowledged, thatprejudice is unacceptable, and that everyone should get with the program” – Sterling EQ

A night filled with Fashion and incredible Music bySouth Africa’s leading artists and designers, along with an amazing initiativelike BLOOM by Positive Heroes is definitely worth you time.

Africa Fashion Week 2011

Day 3

The third and final day of AFW was a whirlwind ofshows, and the Africa Fashion Awards also took place later that evening.Theses are some of my favorite moments form each of the shows.

Chelsey Wilson (Foschini Fastrack)

The first show for the Foschini Fastrack competitionwas Chelsey Wilson, who showed a collection of simple garments in lightcolours.

Mia Kriek (Foschini Fastrack)

Mia Kriek’s Foschini Fastrack show featured a strongmilitaristic collection that was a huge success. This is definitely a designerto keep your eye on for future shows.

Thiki Tafeni(Foschini Fastrack)

The final show from the Foschini Fastrack competitionwas Thiki Tafeni who featured a beautiful collection of elegant pieces. Thesilhouettes form this show was perfectly on trend.

Intisaar

Intisaar’s collection was a beautiful mix of colour& patterns fused into a fun summer range. The eclectic styling was perfectfor this summer’s Boho trend.

Bisma

The Bisma show was spectacular; this collectionfeatures sheer and flowing fabrics in beautiful earth tones.

Maita

Maita showed a tailored yet elegant collectionconsisting out of gold and purple accents. I really loved the structured looksfrom this collection.

Colin Ratisai

A pop of bright colour and loud prints is what wewere treated to at the Colin Ratisai show; this is what summer fashion is allabout. Loved the collection!

Mustafa Hassanali

The Mustafa Hassanali show opened with traditionalKenya Maasai warriors, which was amazing. The collection was beautifullyconstructed out of African prints in modern silhouettes.

Lelesso

Lelesso showed an impeccably styled summercollection, with amazing African prints and chic urban style pieces.

LaQuan Smith

The LaQuan Smith collection was composed of chicurban monotone pieces that were fresh & young. I loved the hints of silversin some of the pieces.

Taibo Bacar

Taibo Bacar‘s show was another of my favorites; Iloved the urban styles and red silk that was used in some of the pieces. Theshow was closed by all black garments that showed sophistication and style.

Lola Faturoti

The use of traditional prints and rich fabrics iswhat made Lola Faturoti’s collection so beautiful to me.

Bunmi Koko

Bunmi Koko’s collection showcased some remarkable yetstylish silhouettes in bright colours and interesting fabrics.

David Tlale

In true David Tlale style the show he put on wasexciting & “exclusive” – the collection consisted out of bright colours inunusual silhouettes and styles. There was a definite “grunge” undertone in themakeup and styling of David’s collection.

I was hugely impressed with the collections at thisyear’s Africa Fashion Week, and my love for the African Fashion Industry grewto new heights! Thank you to the organisers at Celebsa.com for inviting andaccommodating me at AFW2011!

Africa Fashion Week 2011

The 2011 Africa Fashion Week kicked off this pastweek at the Sandton Convention Center and I was there for just about everyshow, 16 shows and 31 collections to be exact! I was blown away by the talent& finesse that our African Designers showcased – I will be doing 3 post over thenext 3 days: one on each day of Africa Fashion Week, featuring every collectionand my favorite pieces or moments from each show.

Later on in the week I will choose my favoritecollections and do a more detailed look at what went into each of those collections. Iwill also be bringing you a glimpse at the Africa Fashion Awards and who wonwhich categories.

Africa Fashion Week 2011 
Day 1

KLUK CGDT 

Opening Africa Fashion Week, KLUK CGDT sett the barhigh with an enchanting collection. KLUK CGDT’s collection was the perfectfusion of elegance & sophistication with a hint of classic drama. 

Marianne Fassler

The Marianne Fassler show was intenselyfabulous, with an “African Techno DJ” opening the “Street JuJu” show. Fassler’scollection was composed of bright colours and bold prints coming together inbeautiful silhouettes.      

Mataano

Mataano showed a summer range that any girl would love to own - fun prints with intelligently made pieces that was styled impeccably.This collection is a great example of how a design team edited their ideas to createsomething beautiful.   

Tart

The Tart show was the first to break the “African Print”trend by introducing an almost all black collection. Tart cleverly used gold accessoriesto draw attention to the simplicity & style that basic black has to offer.

Stefania Morland

Stefania Morland showed a feminine collection ofwhite, gray and black along with elegant prints, sheer fabrics, and knits. Iwas impressed with this collection’s simplicity and styling. 

Alexander Koutny 

The Alexander Koutny collection was the second almostall black collection at AFW2011, but consisted out of intricate silhouettes,beautiful draping and edgy leather accents.

Autonomy

Spring/Summer

2011

Australian Design House Autonomy’s latestSpring/Summer Collection is combination of urban styles and more “traditional”trends. Over all the collection consisted out of Plaid & Chambray fabricsand Striped T’s & Khaki Shorts making this range very easy to pull off forany guy.

The only criticism I have is with the models –grungy, unshaven, and oddly shaped guys did not do this collection justice. Idid however LOVE the “Captains Blazer” that Autonomy reintroduced.
